My brother, Doug, has been here for a couple of weeks. He lives and works in Germany and its been 10 years since we've seen him.<br />
<br />
The main purpose for his trip, other than to see his amazing sister, was to put to rest our parents cremains. Our father passed away in November of 2002 and our mother followed in August of 2004. You are probably thinking, why did it take so long? My mother had 2 brothers that were still living and the plan was for them to all be buried together at Saratoga National Cemetery in Saratoga Springs, New York. Finally, everything had come together and we were finally able to have a dual service there.<br />

After the service, we all went Old Bryan Inn in Saratoga for lunch. It was really good to be able to spend some time with everyone. It wasn't until after lunch that we all went back to the cemetery to actually see where they were buried. We all sat around some more in they area where Vernon was buried. It was late evening when we finally got back to the hotel. It was a quick trip but we were glad to finally get it done. Hard coordinating something like this. In order for them to be side by side, we needed to do it together. We had separate flag ceremonies but only one gun salute for both and of course Jill playing taps. </div>

Since we were not able to drive the motorhome to California, my son was nice enough to send me a plane ticket.<br />

I left the Monday before Easter and had an absolutely wonderful time. My DIL Sarah is a teacher and it was her spring break so we had a lot of fun with April. Thursday we went over to her sisters house. Jenny has a daughter that is 4 months older than April. The purpose that day was to color Easter eggs. They set up a small pool and then the kids colored the eggs using whipped cream and food coloring. <br />

Friday morning I was able to attend the YMCA's Good Friday Breakfast program. When I worked there I attended many of these so it was good to see some of the people I used to work with. It was at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. Here are a couple of pics of this beautiful historic hotel.<br />

Our granddaughter is into cheerleading. She has been going to the same gym since she was 5. She’s now 10. Yesterday we traveled to Virginia Beach to see her compete. We had done this a couple of years ago, but she’s now on 2 different teams so we wanted to see her “fly”. That’s the term they use for those cheerleaders who get thrown up in the air. Even though my heart was beating so fast, I watched as they threw her in the air and she then completed her stunt.<br />
Savannah is the one on the left.<br />

Now she’s in the middle.<br />

On her other team, she doesn’t fly but she has a part in the routine where she does a couple of back hand springs and then blows kisses to the judges.<br />

The teams both did real good on this day, however, they really messed up on Saturday and with a 2 day total they didn’t place very high. But we had fun and enjoyed watching some of the other groups. <br />

We were up early again Sunday morning. First stop was to walk onto the bridge so we could get a closer look at the replica of a Spanish ship. Ed love making models of these ships, so he spent quite a long time looking it over. <a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-hLCGBftnjN4/VPTxlxoEptI/AAAAAAAADWw/nrMrtAGpSTQ/s1600-h/DSC01855%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img align="left" alt="DSC01855" border="0" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-BtWpQ6wcluY/VPTxm4cudBI/AAAAAAAADW4/4un2RhfGuOc/DSC01855_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="280" style="border: 0px currentColor; display: inline; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px;" title="DSC01855" width="367" /></a> <br />
<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-78yLpPJ2Ntc/VPTxnlqPv5I/AAAAAAAADXA/52WjE8QbPPw/s1600-h/DSC01851%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img alt="DSC01851" border="0" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-WKhbA51UZ5Q/VPTxoDO-jSI/AAAAAAAADXI/HRpcRnGTTgs/DSC01851_thumb%25255B6%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="285" style="border: 0px currentColor; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" title="DSC01851" width="373" /></a> Our next stop was Castillo De San Marcos. This was the first stone fort the Spanish queen authorized in 1672. The fort is made of coquina. Coquina is naturally formed in the ocean from limestone and fossilized shells. Its very soft when first quarried, and when left to dry, forms a block that cannon balls cannot penetrate. This fort was never taken over by force. Its the oldest masonry fort in the United States. <br />
<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-O9pdLuSHRRc/VPTxo6708JI/AAAAAAAADXQ/hTkKSsTCGIw/s1600-h/DSC01861%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img alt="DSC01861" border="0" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-YworlyAqwEk/VPTxpUvFMXI/AAAAAAAADXY/TwK4-A4URc0/DSC01861_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="214" style="border: 0px currentColor; display: inline;" title="DSC01861" width="278" /></a> <a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-888sWihczWM/VPTxp-i87OI/AAAAAAAADXg/VXIZTAP26OI/s1600-h/DSC01877%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img alt="DSC01877" border="0" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/--wj9nUOaqOQ/VPTxqe8jxpI/AAAAAAAADXo/uexqw26Xv8U/DSC01877_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="210" style="border: 0px currentColor; display: inline;" title="DSC01877" width="273" /></a> <a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-IimxtbhrRTU/VPTxq93vu2I/AAAAAAAADXw/cKAvv9NphVk/s1600-h/DSC01868%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img alt="DSC01868" border="0" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-EfAGabLNJcE/VPTxrRVqJ1I/AAAAAAAADX4/04NuE27Ab5c/DSC01868_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="207" style="border: 0px currentColor; display: inline;" title="DSC01868" width="269" /></a> <br />
We took the time to watch a demonstration of a cannon fire.<br />
<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-2zkJG4WrGAg/VPTxr4LyCkI/AAAAAAAADYA/9xI5gtrX9VE/s1600-h/DSC01874%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img align="left" alt="DSC01874" border="0" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-8e6rSeeJdJI/VPTxsVnOUcI/AAAAAAAADYI/E1DZX3YFHNc/DSC01874_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="204" style="border: 0px currentColor; display: inline; margin: 0px 35px 0px 0px;" title="DSC01874" width="265" /></a> <br />
We were told that the reason they were so good at defending the fort, was that the practiced every day. They always used the oldest gunpowder for practice and saved the good stuff for the real battles. There cannons they fired that day had a 3 mile range. They were very accurate when in battle.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
We then hoped on the trolley to go to Mission Nombre De Dios. When Pedro Menendez de Aviles landed in St Augustine he had with him, Father Lopez. Father Lopez was to bring Catholicism back to the area. This is the first mission in the United States. The Statue of Father Lopez with the cross in the background. The cross marks the spot of the landing. <br />

There is so much to see in this town. In order to really see everything you need a good week. We only had 3 days and only 2 of them were nice enough to walk around. It would really be good if you could take the time to rest a day in between. But we really enjoyed the area. Wouldn’t be a bad place to settle someday.</div>

After going to the Golf Hall of Fame, we spent the next 3 days touring around the beautiful town of St. Augustine. First thing we did was go to the tourist information center and we bought a 3 day trolley pass with admission to the Fountain of Youth Park. It was still very cold on Friday when we bought the tickets, but we decided since it was late in the day, that we would just take the trolley all away around and then decide what we wanted to see. <br />
<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-SErth1fMwV4/VPNoHhmIyrI/AAAAAAAADU4/wgBjaOmX0n4/s1600-h/DSC0176312.jpg"><img align="left" alt="DSC01763" border="0" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-33jS0p8pFkY/VPNoIpSrF4I/AAAAAAAADVA/ZlQ0jicSIfo/DSC01763_thumb8.jpg?imgmax=800" height="268" style="border-width: 0px; display: inline; margin: 5px 50px 0px 0px;" title="DSC01763" width="351" /></a> <br />
Saturday we got an early start and our first stop was the Fountain of Youth Park. Ponce De Leon arrived in Florida and found what natives had told him was water that had the ability to grant eternal youth. This a large park was once home to the ancient Timucuan Indians and evidence has been found that early Spaniards had a village here.<br />
Back on the trolley, we then toured the Old Jail, Oldest Store and History Museum. Henry Flagler came to St. Augustine in 1891 and bought land and built the Ponce De Leon Hotel. On the land, was the county jail. He paid to build the jail on the location its on now. Looking from the street, he didn’t want it to look like a jail. The jail held both women and men. This location is also where the Oldest Store was. This store furnished many of the things Henry Flagler needed for his hotel. <br />

This grand hotel had running water and electricity installed by his friend Thomas Edison in each room. Guests we expected to stay for the entire winter season. The dining hall (yellow round portion) had windows made from Tiffany. These stained glass windows are now protected with plexiglas. It is now home to Henry Flagler College.<br />
<br />
After we finished at the Old Jail, Store and Museum, we hoped back on the trolley and got off at St George Street. This street had many shops that are housed in some of the oldest parts of the town. These stone pillars are at the entrance. <br />

We are currently in St. Augustine, Florida. One of our missions here was to see the Golf Hall of Fame. We did that yesterday. It was very cold here in Florida, just as it is in most of the United States, so we thought it would be a good day for an indoor activity. However, the entrance fee includes a round of golf on the 18 hole putting course. If we had known, we probably would have waited. <br />
<br />
Ed enjoyed it anyway. He spent a good 2 to 3 hours roaming the museum. They had a nice exhibit and tribute to Bob Hope. He loved golf and gave a huge boost to the PGA with his golf tournaments in Palm Springs. Then it was on to the history of golf. Ed got to stand on a replica of the bridge at St. Andrews Golf Club in Scotland.<br />

<br />
Then on to the newer history and the Wall of Honor.<br />

Just realized my last post was back in October!! Wow! So I thought it was time update it.<br />
<br />
Our time at Amazon went fast after the Halloween holiday. They were having some trouble finding workers up at the warehouse in Indiana so about 100 of the work campers who were in Kentucky moved out and headed to campgrounds just above Louisville. After that happened a lot of us remaining were shifted to other positions. Since we had done ICQA (inventory control) before, that’s where we finished out our time. We finished up on the 19th of December and headed to Livingston.<br />
<br />
The weather there was horrible. We were there 21 days and I think we saw the sun twice in that time. We went through a tank of propane because it was so cold. (we didn’t use our electric heater because we have to pay our own electric). <br />
<br />
We spent a great weekend in San Antonio with good friends, David and Noreen Becker. We worked with them for 2 years in New York and they joined us in 2012 at Amazon. We spent Saturday walking around the Alamo and River walk. Had lunch at Buckhorn Saloon and toured the Texas Ranger Museum. Sunday we hung around the park and watched the football games. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-6dGcVM2fkNs/VM1Lzo5mBJI/AAAAAAAADQs/b0cZvogchYs/s1600-h/DSC016223.jpg"><img alt="DSC01622" border="0" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-fw3EcH_pAj0/VM1L0hEDRII/AAAAAAAADQ0/GuGMdmiXk68/DSC01622_thumb1.jpg?imgmax=800" height="200" style="border-width: 0px; display: inline;" title="DSC01622" width="260" /></a> <br />
<br />
We left Monday and headed back to Humble, Texas. Ed is having some issues with a high calcium level. He was sent to an endogrinogist who wanted him to do some other testing. He had more blood work done and had a bone density test. Still waiting for results.<br />
<br />
We moved on to Pass Christian, Mississippi. I really love the area here. When Ed and I win the lottery we have found our next sticks and brick house. House with a view!!!<br />
<br />

Looked it up on Zillow. Only 12.5 million!!! 15 bedrooms!! Enough for my whole family!!<br />
<br />
One evening we had dinner at Shaggy’s. Sign says its the best seafood dive!! Ed had the shrimp basket and I had the chicken basket. We were going to have the fish, but we found out it was catfish so we passed. Neither of us is fond of catfish. But the shrimp was very good as was the chicken. As you can see, we had enough food!!<br />

We have worked for the past 4 years with good friends Al and Jan Schwartz. Jan LOVES Halloween and celebrates the whole month of October. Since we will be working on Halloween next Friday, she had her gathering last night. Even though we worked yesterday, it was our last day for the week. Jan had everyone over to her place for some Halloween Chili. <br />

We can’t have wood fires here at the park, but that didn’t stop us from having fires. Seems the thing to do is head to Lowes and get these little propane firepits.<br />

We have survived our first 40 hour week. Amazon starts their Camper force out working 5 hrs a day for the first 2 weeks. This is what they refer to as “work hardening”. We would get up at 4 am to get to work to start at 6 am. We would get off at 11 am. Then we would fight to stay awake for the next 5 hours so that we would be tired enough to go to bed at 8pm! That was harder that actually working the 10 hours. <br />
<br />
This past week was our first week at 10hrs a day. We start work at 6 am, have our first break at 8:30 am and are eating our lunch at 10:30am! We are stowing this year, which means we take the carts the receivers fill up and find places to put the merchandise. So far, it hasn’t been to bad. Only bad thing…I’ve got two blisters on my feet. In all the years we have put in at Amazon, this is the first time that this has happened!! So I just went out and bought some new socks. Hopefully that will solve the problem. <br />
<br />
Last night, we all went out to Garcia’s, a local mexican restaurant, to celebrate our first 40 hr week.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-W4kWla2igZk/VCiTLoKU6kI/AAAAAAAADO4/NqzE6DWWG-A/s1600-h/Friends%252520at%252520Garcia%252527s%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Friends at Garcia's" border="0" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-D63Dv8dc8yk/VCiTMMdoTvI/AAAAAAAADPA/-nNbBwDWgRg/Friends%252520at%252520Garcia%252527s_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="282" style="border: 0px currentColor; display: inline;" title="Friends at Garcia's" width="485" /></a> <br />
<br />
These friends are one of the reasons why we keep coming back. Like family coming together once a year. We will do this many times as the weeks progress because more “family” will be arriving each week.</div>

We left Rapid City behind on August 24th and drove to Sioux Falls the first night. That was our longest drive, about 350 miles. When traveling quickly, we use Walmarts. We left Sioux Falls and traveled to Des Moines. One of the pre employment requirements for work at Amazon is a drug test. As big as Rapid City was they did not have a Quest Lab, so we had a scheduled appointment in Des Moines. We were a day early but they were able to fit us in. Next day, we drove to Bettendorf and stayed 3 days Isle of Capri Casino. Ed played in a poker tournament twice, came close the second time but didn’t win either. We played Bingo one night and I won a game. <br />
<br />
We left the casino and drove to Indiana for a scheduled stop at a Thousand Trails park, Horseshoe Lakes. Our reservations were for 7 nights but when we arrived they didn’t have any FHU site that would fit us, so we ended up in overflow and had electric only. We could have moved to a regular site after the holiday weekend, but we had decided we would leave there early. We left there on Wednesday and drove to Louisville for a stay at another casino. Didn’t win but had a wonderful dinner at the buffet. Anytime I can get my fill of peel and eat shrimp, I am a happy camper!! <br />
<br />
We left Thursday morning for the final 100 miles of our trip to Campbellsville, Kentucky. Amazon pays for your site starting 2 days before your start date, so we had to pay for 3 days. With those extra days, we were able to take our time getting set up. Ed washed the outside and I did a good cleaning inside. With all the travel and staying places without full hook ups, the motorhome really needed some TLC. It will feel good to be stationery for 4 months. Even with the hard work, we feel like this little town is almost like home. <br />
<br />
So tomorrow starts our first day. <br />

Ted had graduated from pharmacy school in 1929. His father had died and left him $3000. They found Wall South Dakota because there was a drugstore for sale and also because it had a Catholic Church. Business was not good and they had decided that they would give it 5 years. One day, during the summer of 1936, while trying to take a nap, Dorothy came up with the idea to put signs up on then 16A, advertising free ice water. Ted and Billy painted the signs and put them up the next weekend and the rest is history. People started stopping on their way to Yellowstone National Park. </p> <p>This small town in the middle of nowhere has become quite the tourist stop. Wall Drug takes up one whole side of the road and is like a small mall with all the different shops there. You can get 5 cent coffee and $1.00 donuts.</p> <p> <a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-Sy_ezst2wg4/U_0XnWCOs7I/AAAAAAAADNw/eT8FAiO3Cx8/s1600-h/DSC01598%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01598" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01598" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-eRLFq9RKnLE/U_0XorRLK5I/AAAAAAAADN0/vz0o2DqVPIQ/DSC01598_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="378" height="288"></a> <a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-2QkXXs-n07s/U_0XpdLQrOI/AAAAAAAADOA/xYayqX3SJHA/s1600-h/DSC01596%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01596" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01596" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-vE5V4j08hPI/U_0XqMECSQI/AAAAAAAADOE/tXRx4Rel17Q/DSC01596_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="367" height="280"></a> </p> <p> <a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-3V_d8QISKVM/U_0XqyA0T9I/AAAAAAAADOM/pFqMsXo3h9o/s1600-h/DSC01597%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01597" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01597" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-EOb8M3wJY6s/U_0XreU8MsI/AAAAAAAADOY/vPEmEpSEm6I/DSC01597_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="381" height="291"></a> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8m8NUdMn_SgC5At3D8wFiXLLC7vVnFJY-kHu4JkDHMggADvFhG6cKzaFGIgiW7A17E7f8bTKCSKZUCZ-3qw4J8jQZILyyYkjNIZNhsK-WrcS5QCFZTMh-HBPHHK4drYOjybqRpJrI1wg/s1600-h/DSC01599%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01599" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01599" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-hNNeB6Dq_EI/U_0XtPanbyI/AAAAAAAADOo/wIZwqPaNo2E/DSC01599_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="374" height="286"></a> </p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p>Now I can say I’ve been to Wall Drug. </p> Traveling Alonghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17274717556505019306noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3138973302112858114.post-16451920410322214362014-08-23T21:57:00.000-04:002014-08-23T21:57:10.201-04:00One last thing in Rapid City<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
Rapid City South Dakota is also known as the City of Presidents. It’s the only city where you can see life-sized bronze statues of each president. On each street corner on Main Street and St Joseph Street are the 42 presidents. The statues are done by South Dakota artists. The only requirement was that each artist extensively research the lives of each president. They did not want to create static portraits of men standing on the street corners. Each statue was to give some insight into the personality. <br />
Unfortunately it started raining a little on us, so we had to rush through some of them. They are not in any kind of order. There were 4 statues done each year starting in 2000 and the City of Presidents Board decided to do 2 of historical presidents and 2 of modern day. <br />

The first stop before you start walking the streets is the President Info Center. This room is based on the oval office with a replicated seal in the center. There is also a brief description of each president. It is really worth walking around an looking at these statues. I wish it hadn’t started to rain. Very nicely done and it really brings something good to the downtown area of Rapid City. </div>

Once the flag is down and folded, every person gives his name and branch of service. </p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-OaINEbfqTnw/U_Vk1SZ53TI/AAAAAAAADJw/WQRJqdwTMSc/s1600-h/DSC01564%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01564" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01564" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-vAtUC58MB7I/U_Vk25GF11I/AAAAAAAADJ0/4JJGAIz7H1s/DSC01564_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="260" height="200"></a> <a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-X7LTTemwthI/U_Vk3rQUmzI/AAAAAAAADKA/vf_JlrnW-ZE/s1600-h/DSC01562%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01562" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01562" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-i8vMhOzSlQ0/U_Vk4iW-haI/AAAAAAAADKI/fAuY-t7OK3k/DSC01562_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="260" height="200"></a> <a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-LDKBAmaue2U/U_Vk50_TBqI/AAAAAAAADKQ/MNUoHkAzAdk/s1600-h/DSC01569%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01569" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01569" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0K1n1cJBk20YeFlel2ZfHh9alWdMVOCxKmEgKZ38dmKywLZusYe0tLuGwt3iFHjULpOeb-_go8_QG6JXEjkoJEe9tgmKGPhPL3d9KHkwEBT7v4JbuywCM0nApiIjQ3fkb6wVWo4wRBcE/?imgmax=800" width="260" height="200"></a> </p> <p></p> <p></p> <p>Very long day with a lot of driving. Rapid City has a brand new museum. It’s called the Founding Fathers Museum. The outside is a exact replica of Independence Hall in Philadelphia. Inside, it's a recreation of the famous painting by John Trumbull of the presentation of the first draft of the Declaration of Independence to the 2nd Continental Congress.<br />

Around the outer edge of the room, there is a picture with a short history of everyone of the members of the 2nd Continental Congress. There were 5 of those members who didn’t sign the declaration. Those 56 who signed, risked charges of treason. <br />
The museum is very well done and worth a stop. </div>

The pose for the carving is said to be in response to the white man asking Crazy Horse where his lands are now. His response was to point and say “My lands are where my dead lie buried”. </p> <p></p> <p>Korczak was 40 years old at the time and had $174 to his name. He felt that this should be built by the interested public and not with federal money. He twice turned down offers for federal funding. He also knew that this was a project that would not be finished in his lifetime, so he left detailed plans to be used to continue the carving. His wife, Ruth and seven of their children continue working with the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation to continue his work. </p> <p>There is quite a complex here at the memorial. One daughter runs the gift shop while another runs the restaurant. Sons continue to work on the carving. There is also a Indian University on the grounds. </p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-_Okmr-4b1xc/U_DV28_grsI/AAAAAAAADFw/2UUf7DiKaIQ/s1600-h/DSC01455%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01455" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; margin-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC01455" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-MNqVpeceGxI/U_DV3wszxeI/AAAAAAAADF4/GLzRQyUdB2Q/DSC01455_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="380" align="left" height="290"></a> We also took time to watch and listen to this indian dancer. This performer not only did some of the dances, but also explained what the dance represented. One of the most interesting dance he did was called a “grass dance” He explained that this dance was done to stomp down the prairie grass so that the tipi’s could be erected. He was asked how long he thought the grass dance lasted at Little Big Horn. His response was about 3 days. This dance was continued until the last tipi was erected. </p> <p> </p> <p>It’s a very interesting place and well worth the entrance fee. </p> Traveling Alonghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17274717556505019306noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3138973302112858114.post-86508157360684091232014-08-13T13:54:00.001-04:002014-08-13T14:02:04.399-04:00Deadwood<p>Yesterday we took the trip to Deadwood. I wanted to see the bar where Wild Bill Hickok was shot and where he and Calamity Jane were buried. We took a bus tour of Deadwood that took us up the hill (very steep) to Mount Moriah Cemetery. Some myths regarding the two were busted on the tour. Calamity Jane and Wild Bill were never lovers. He was married and had come to Deadwood to make his fortune. Calamity Jane was on the same stage arriving in Deadwood. Wild Bill was only in Deadwood for a couple of months before he was shot in the back of the head by Jack McCall. </p> <p> <a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-EGBPMgN7TzE/U-ul-eCsTQI/AAAAAAAADC4/CIRf1KyUu0s/s1600-h/DSC01377%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01377" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01377" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-aNeCWrFDjek/U-umBCpCJjI/AAAAAAAADDA/XQ2dVcIknjk/DSC01377_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="272" height="361"></a> <a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-a3Btn4ogmyQ/U-umC2GXl4I/AAAAAAAADDI/EPFg6aftaVY/s1600-h/DSC01380%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01380" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01380" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-QUPwQN3iRmg/U-umEZ0BtFI/AAAAAAAADDQ/J-VYeH2rVKs/DSC01380_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="390" height="294"></a> </p> <p></p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-tClzzhHOb2g/U-umF6iEJhI/AAAAAAAADDU/_jq69qsyaSE/s1600-h/DSC01398%25255B11%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01398" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; margin-right: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC01398" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-whxgtsUmwfo/U-umHFCQvZI/AAAAAAAADDg/yaaC72LpJLQ/DSC01398_thumb%25255B7%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="252" align="left" height="333"></a> Calamity Jane was a large woman who dressed like a man. They were a very wealthy family in Deadwood and when she died, they paid for her to be buried next to Wild Bill. </p> <p>After the tour, we walked around the town a little and then went into Saloon #10 to watch a reenactment of the shooting of Wild Bill.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p>Ed was chosen to play the part of the bar tender.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-2avCjo4mGgs/U-umIX_WR0I/AAAAAAAADDo/8s-BmNbXFMQ/s1600-h/DSC01409%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01409" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01409" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-hRV2uZvuJTU/U-umJ-4YNkI/AAAAAAAADDw/9nGOrkzn_68/DSC01409_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="303" height="228"></a> <a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-iOIPtNEG-RY/U-umKjHXErI/AAAAAAAADD4/eNJx0rLkB6A/s1600-h/DSC01418%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01418" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01418" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-X0shY8tVF8w/U-umL2hgqXI/AAAAAAAADEA/cbWxcOHReG4/DSC01418_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="299" height="225"></a> <a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-hnNhmoy6Z-Y/U-umM2S5vZI/AAAAAAAADEI/nDwkoL_fhMk/s1600-h/DSC01425%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01425" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01425" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/--J9_ijOEZTI/U-umPCHiWHI/AAAAAAAADEQ/qkyJF_J0mz4/DSC01425_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="215" height="286"></a> </p> <p> </p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-BXl6p6pD_0I/U-umQWjp_fI/AAAAAAAADEY/vT52py0oYcU/s1600-h/DSC01376%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01376" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01376" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-97AKLkV2NRQ/U-umRvMlJvI/AAAAAAAADEg/84ZpyKtx6aM/DSC01376_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="327" height="247"></a> </p> <p>Wild Bill jumps onto the tour bus. </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-mgXh4Cewyok/U-umSjYTfmI/AAAAAAAADEo/k7o0SR3L12Y/s1600-h/DSC01390%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01390" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01390" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-HjmDqbTbkn8/U-umUqHRpTI/AAAAAAAADEs/ex41wTDvG8g/DSC01390_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="284" height="214"></a> <a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-pu5bikLxZcY/U-umVxM0vlI/AAAAAAAADE4/VjqR_N4BMLQ/s1600-h/DSC01403%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01403" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01403" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-G-vWpL6Oh6c/U-umXwTutYI/AAAAAAAADFA/g4XmrBbDa0w/DSC01403_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="286" height="216"></a> </p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p>Still to go…Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Custer State park.</p> Traveling Alonghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17274717556505019306noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3138973302112858114.post-4031269958549133742014-08-11T19:43:00.001-04:002014-08-11T19:45:32.389-04:00Devils Tower<p>This towering monument stands 865 feet. Its was the nations first national monument dedicated by Teddy Roosevelt in 1906. Indian legend says that one day while the tribe camped nearby, a bear started chasing a group of girls. They jumped on a rock three feet high and began to pray, “Rock, take pity on us; Rock save us”. The rock heard them and began to elongate itself upwards, pushing them higher and higher. The bear clawed and jumped at the sides of the rock, broke his claws and fell to the earth. The rock pushed the girls into the sky where they are to this day in a group called the seven little stars (the Pleiades).</p> <p>When you look at the tower it looks as if it has been clawed by a bear. The campground we stayed at was a KOA. We were going to stay in the park at their campground, but when we went through it we saw we couldn’t fit. They didn’t give any length limit on their website so the KOA was the only alternative. However that evening they did show the movie “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” so that was kind of cool to watch it while looking at the tower!</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh365dA0tk_P6w8EdEqg4GHANcgkEhLTuBpwjR7Pe3y2dKoCEH8pQmnPHl_Yprw6FePauCFsPz6Cp8iJ_fk1r88q1DNda8ccT4ODF7tHQrWs-kjptbdkfphzlqXuK9SbvuNJixnOGMH-k8/s1600-h/DSC01364%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01364" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01364" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-EM_d9cGf9S4/U-lVGxGYyKI/AAAAAAAADB4/Bc9_BPe7G_o/DSC01364_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="246" height="321"></a> <a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-CzzCeJmgA2E/U-lVHjDJ6zI/AAAAAAAADCA/SEaIZu0Iylo/s1600-h/DSC01355%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01355" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01355" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-BD2yt4cJhNY/U-lVIhkcDiI/AAAAAAAADCI/rVBapIRq8HM/DSC01355_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="398" height="304"></a> </p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p>Before you get to the visitor center you pass through Prairie Dog Town. A scout even told Custer that there were more Indians than he had bullets. If he had waited until all the other regiments came together they probably would have been okay. We will never know.</p> <p> <a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-n8KuAVm8vZ8/U-V4IylZn_I/AAAAAAAAC_Y/0bcn9RTChDg/s1600-h/DSC01324%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01324" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01324" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-r9m_y2MdpTo/U-V4KsMAlNI/AAAAAAAAC_g/KKD-awt8xwA/DSC01324_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="352" height="269"></a> <a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-mHSvmqOEZ9w/U-V4LvPlOYI/AAAAAAAAC_o/350b6dywlb4/s1600-h/DSC01325%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01325" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01325" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-8MCMMA4hMjc/U-V4NHEdxNI/AAAAAAAAC_w/4C9ufDB9ZxE/DSC01325_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="296" height="388"></a> </p> <p>The white marker with the black front is where Custer fell. These were the soldiers that fell on what is now called Last Stand Hill. He was removed from Little Bighorn and is buried at West Point. </p> <p></p> <p> <a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-b616Ze4oPqc/U-V4OZ2u80I/AAAAAAAAC_4/fs-oRCIbsJ8/s1600-h/DSC01326%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01326" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01326" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_PVXwUGFgKOpqwYGl7WfLk-NQoNwxAR1L5vftrmN0qicOjuCuC8uWZ8w79oVJrJfzMCbvNXVn6VMdBB_JUgtCfNF9c5M1OTHeP_RwoVkU32uvOLNHyomtR57JiSdAmleXvLKfV6LkPoE/?imgmax=800" width="393" height="300"></a> </p> <p></p> <p></p> <p></p> <p>Such a vast open area. In 1984, a grass fire went through the area. After the fire, a lot of artifacts where revealed. Archaeologists were able to track a lot of the movements through these findings. All over the battlefield you see these white markers. Most of them in twos. They probably fought back to back. </p> <p>They have an Indian Memorial.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-YxwaxN71xfs/U-V4Qw0dAGI/AAAAAAAADAI/KpmBn0DlqIw/s1600-h/DSC01340%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01340" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01340" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-bqPk2VuE7_I/U-V4R0FVyFI/AAAAAAAADAQ/rXvgFhSXoTs/DSC01340_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="268" height="206"></a> <a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-6k3Uwk-iikk/U-V4S_UbNtI/AAAAAAAADAY/2CQCYOYLle0/s1600-h/DSC01338%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01338" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01338" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-2y78ES2M0EA/U-V4Txr_d9I/AAAAAAAADAg/5rxvp0ClAG4/DSC01338_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="260" height="200"></a> </p> <p></p> <p>A horse cemetery. It seems a lot of the soldiers had shot their horses to use as barricades.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-CIuGIEu8JYY/U-V4Uruy3OI/AAAAAAAADAo/V_tr7nz_Cw0/s1600-h/DSC01329%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01329" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01329" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-M52Y9-qe4lU/U-V4WDRCkoI/AAAAAAAADAw/8OCqGzdRzzg/DSC01329_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="200" height="260"></a> </p> <p>We also stopped at Custer Museum. This is right down the road from where we are staying in a town called Garryowen. Garryowen was the tune that was played as the 7th Calvary marched. Outside they have a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier that was dedicated 50 years after the battle. Actually it came about because some road workers uncovered the remains. It’s believed that it was one of Lt Col Reno’s men. They know it was a soldier because they found buttons. The black and white photo is the actual dedication. The indian is believed to be the one who shot Custer and the man is a survivor of the battle. Inside the tomb they laid a hatchet among other artifacts. This is where the term “bury the hatchet” came from. Notice the man is not looking directly at the indian. </p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-i0kejHzKFJc/U-V4XXqrMKI/AAAAAAAADA4/S0ki8ZcltFY/s1600-h/DSC01345%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01345" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01345" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-UeFTQBE9Twg/U-V4YbBj89I/AAAAAAAADBA/KZPJroSjyDc/DSC01345_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="321" height="246"></a> <a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-HnU5sSQAjkw/U-V4ZdW7PAI/AAAAAAAADBI/bJMCEQterkc/s1600-h/dedication%252520of%252520tomb%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="dedication of tomb" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="dedication of tomb" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-K6I91217ZUg/U-V4agK0KBI/AAAAAAAADBQ/QKjsndxKcYU/dedication%252520of%252520tomb_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="363" height="249"></a> </p> <p></p> <p></p> <p>I’m really glad that we came this way. This is a collection of historic buildings that had been taken apart and reassembled to form this town.</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-dQo_QseHD-w/U-Lp01feKII/AAAAAAAAC78/n7nDR-Wcvlw/s1600-h/Hole%252520in%252520the%252520wall%252520gang%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="Hole in the wall gang" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="Hole in the wall gang" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-3zo610HVLNk/U-Lp2xvQxEI/AAAAAAAAC8E/xDIKza1tg5s/Hole%252520in%252520the%252520wall%252520gang_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="260" height="200"></a> <a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-R4dacpS8Zgw/U-Lp4MifGKI/AAAAAAAAC8M/_KqLsUg5Mb8/s1600-h/hole%252520gang%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="hole gang" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="hole gang" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-5LfpsGe_tg4/U-Lp6DIzX2I/AAAAAAAAC8U/RLDA9CWarts/hole%252520gang_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="260" height="200"></a> <a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-ETa79tl39sI/U-Lp7jKp5nI/AAAAAAAAC8c/H474ed8Z3n8/s1600-h/DSC01242%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01242" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01242" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-2qR2xZ_zK44/U-Lp8ozhfkI/AAAAAAAAC8k/vor-e30MTFU/DSC01242_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="260" height="200"></a> </p> <p></p> <p></p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-rBw6gcD9lkI/U-Lp9ZBj2wI/AAAAAAAAC8s/rDkPpufgi8c/s1600-h/DSC01236%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01236" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01236" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-bO9i_FsV3ys/U-Lp-aTw85I/AAAAAAAAC8w/okqg3TTs1vo/DSC01236_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="260" height="200"></a> </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-BrN9s3MDxGY/U-Lp_FP6ZYI/AAAAAAAAC88/WcjnM6JYHuU/s1600-h/DSC01217%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01217" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01217" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Kad2wSrC3LM/U-Lp_0x9qKI/AAAAAAAAC9E/UY3I-n77VkI/DSC01217_thumb%25255B6%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="354" height="467"></a> </p> <p>This the grave site of Jeremiah Johnson. We learned that Jeremiah Johnson died in Los Angeles. Actually I think it was Lancaster, Ca which is in LA county. He was ill and went there to an old soldiers home. He died there and was buried in a veterans cemetery. When they wanted to put a road through the cemetery, they started trying to find out who would be interested in moving his body. The children from the area where at the burial along with Robert Redford who played Jeremiah Johnson in the movie. There are some other graves that have been moved to the town, but his is the best. </p> <p>Today we went to Buffalo Bill Center of the West. Very nice museum, but it is huge! The admission can be used for 2 days and if we had known that ahead of time, we would have gone yesterday and today. There is actually 6 different areas. We toured 3 of them, Buffalo Bill, Draper Natural History and the Plains Indian.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-GEHFnF5xoLU/U-LqAsRsrrI/AAAAAAAAC9M/u7L5O7jU-o0/s1600-h/DSC01244%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01244" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01244" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-LbNImXJL24I/U-LqBRrUz3I/AAAAAAAAC9U/Rza1xOKWFZA/DSC01244_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="260" height="200"></a> <a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-3MkKVyvFnbM/U-LqCC3AW2I/AAAAAAAAC9c/JzyR3OFCeyY/s1600-h/DSC01245%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01245" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01245" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-Ju5ZEyw5HT4/U-LqDHoCxKI/AAAAAAAAC9k/J5RNKRcriXA/DSC01245_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="200" height="260"></a> <a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-XrPkiH3rAHg/U-LqEIkNi_I/AAAAAAAAC9s/9g48iFF5d5Q/s1600-h/DSC01255%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01255" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01255" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-tAAmIVATlyE/U-LqE4QD3KI/AAAAAAAAC90/3NimUrdzKAE/DSC01255_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="260" height="200"></a> <a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-djzlX-FVoVc/U-LqFpH05RI/AAAAAAAAC98/ixhxIVpYJYs/s1600-h/DSC01298%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01298" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01298" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-z--UdIWPGC4/U-LqGWVWr9I/AAAAAAAAC-E/mJMLri_MxZM/DSC01298_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="200" height="260"></a> </p> <p>We also sat and watched another show with Rapter Birds. </p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-4FdZbPOZ__k/U-LqHHXRyBI/AAAAAAAAC-M/oAP08cNOMAo/s1600-h/Falcon%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="Falcon" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="Falcon" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-_SlqkjyEhXU/U-LqJzcFrQI/AAAAAAAAC-U/OChimsXXN1o/Falcon_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="337" height="258"></a> <a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-ea5XB0xjLoc/U-LqKytoCCI/AAAAAAAAC-c/juAFhLMDVbI/s1600-h/owl%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="owl" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="owl" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-6DSPhLtHRk0/U-LqL7W35UI/AAAAAAAAC-k/VKSi8LKDVxA/owl_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="331" height="253"></a> <a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-IVwl2WEXJPs/U-LqMiDTe-I/AAAAAAAAC-s/EIliILuzJts/s1600-h/hawk%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="hawk" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="hawk" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-_qjGIbOaCTw/U-LqN7qdDOI/AAAAAAAAC-0/YV0cvPywCYI/hawk_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="321" height="246"></a> <a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-f3mINTyHxvk/U-LqOjMsjhI/AAAAAAAAC-8/4nAT9sSTq58/s1600-h/Golden%252520eagle%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="Golden eagle" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="Golden eagle" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-URqpZxbzJwk/U-LqPTX7TmI/AAAAAAAAC_E/gF5Dm-GcuYc/Golden%252520eagle_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="318" height="418"></a> </p> <p>It was a very interesting day. They thought it <u>might</u> a check valve and we were going to have them change it but once he got to the engine under the bed, he realized he couldn’t get to it easily. They would have to take the whole bedroom apart and we would have to stay in a motel for a night. They couldn’t guarantee that was the problem. So we opted to do nothing. </p> <p>After we dumped our tanks and filled with fresh water, we pulled out of Rock Springs around 1pm. We had no problems with the drive and arrived in Cody around 6pm. Most of the drive was flat open range land except for a very pretty drive through Wind River Canyon. From a distance, it looked like we were going to have to climb some big mountains, but the road just kind of wove through them.</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-Ghr_wOkMzZk/U-F18L_yGWI/AAAAAAAAC6E/fPc3OzuCqyI/s1600-h/DSC01174%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01174" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01174" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaOUXKejo9WczHwz6JKRPrTlEKNKUm1fjvurVvPe051HkbHcNU0YhVe2zg9mT4iMIB_DMA-ESJYHSRLjzqAnLpnXGfrLoh8MrBhloHUBk8iIA0YuwWNcbrEeeVx0A6AmPJgxltFWXvtFU/?imgmax=800" width="260" height="200"></a> <a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-pP2mDYq4RpY/U-F1_1M0bLI/AAAAAAAAC6U/SjbxsCncY6s/s1600-h/DSC01173%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01173" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01173" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-KGVHmH1CEI8/U-F2A4TDRFI/AAAAAAAAC6c/g8X3W121hlI/DSC01173_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="260" height="200"></a> <a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-j7baJIBtB_s/U-F2BtADx1I/AAAAAAAAC6k/eWiUBiwlQb8/s1600-h/DSC01170%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01170" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01170" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-Vw5IAkDkbRQ/U-F2CQ_5VyI/AAAAAAAAC6s/exibkD6OxdE/DSC01170_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="260" height="200"></a> </p> <p>This morning we went into Cody to walk the town. Windshield is complete, however we are still in Rock Springs. Again we are having problems starting the motorhome. We were going to have the windshield replaced yesterday, but couldn’t get the motorhome started. We had a mobile mechanic come and change the fuel filter. Thought that was it. But when we tried to start it again today, it wouldn’t start. Had the same mobile mechanic come out and we got it started. We went and dump our tanks and left the motorhome running the whole time they replaced the windshield. We have found a different Cat dealer who will be able to fix us, but not until Monday. So here we sit, in the dealers lot. Now we are actually hoping it won’t start. Then they will be able to find the problem. Really glad we were in such a big town with many truck mechanics. </div>

While we are waiting for our new windshield to come in, we are trying to find something to do. We have played Bingo…didn’t win. We went to the movies to see “Lucy”, it was an okay movie.<br />
Today, the Sweetwater County Fair started with the first of many horse shows. Since we used to have horses and did show them, we thought this would be a fun thing to do. We really enjoyed this day. These were kids showing these horses. They are all part of 4H. Those who place first, have the opportunity to go to the State Fair to compete. <br />
Today, we watched Halter classes and then English. <br />

Isn’t this girl just too cute!! They start them young. I forgot that I even had my camera, so I missed some of the other classes. <br />

We plan on going back on Tuesday. They will have Western riding at that time. These kids even get into beginning rodeo. They have barrel racing! While talking to a family whose daughter competed today, we learned that their son will be showing pigs. We might even go watch that. Usually, when you go to county fairs, you walk through and look at all the animals to see who won. We are actually seeing the judging. <br />
We will know more tomorrow about a time line for the windshield. We are keeping our fingers crossed that it come in and we can get it completed by the end of the week. Fingers crossed. </div>

However if we can find a not-for-profit learning animal center, we like that even better. When we were in Tampa Florida we visited one that rescued sea birds and one that rescued sea turtles and dolphins. So when we found the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center, we had to go. </p> <p>The have a wonderful naturalist cabin with glass windows where you can see the wolves. They have a great movie playing that gives wonderful information about wolves. All of the animals at the center have been rescued and for one reason of another, they could no longer live in the wild.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-O3uQkzNJfLI/U8Rpe5NaqWI/AAAAAAAAC1c/rIPHvwuUaow/s1600-h/DSC01013%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01013" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01013" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-zg7DSi1ppZk/U8RpgLTEDOI/AAAAAAAAC1g/GiGRzn3F43k/DSC01013_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="355" height="271"></a> <a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-z2qhiU2mMXc/U8Rpg84vXwI/AAAAAAAAC1s/hMVaZzGxybo/s1600-h/DSC01017%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01017" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01017" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-tHahgWDf6Pg/U8Rphvro2bI/AAAAAAAAC10/RHa53yoZuUA/DSC01017_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="346" height="264"></a> </p> <p>We then waited for them to bring out Sam. Sam is a grizzly bear from Alaska. It takes a grizzly cub two years to learn to live on his own. Sam was found as a cub, not sure what happened to his mother. Before they let Sam into the enclosure, they “hid” his food. He must “forage” for his food. </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-KdcUYziSadQ/U8RpiDOqs5I/AAAAAAAAC18/ifsByZz9xHA/s1600-h/DSC01030%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01030" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01030" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-nB1K-239yDk/U8Rpkm0OC0I/AAAAAAAAC2E/uwu7r9BccxA/DSC01030_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="326" height="250"></a> <a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-K02wgKFn-AY/U8RplGpyOTI/AAAAAAAAC2M/1NWJwpmvv7Y/s1600-h/DSC01031%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="DSC01031" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="DSC01031" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-rSFVRAUZWuo/U8Rpl1nof5I/AAAAAAAAC2U/XNHtnNHJSFY/DSC01031_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="317" height="243"></a> </p> <p></p> <p></p> <p>We then watched a presentation on different birds of prey. Day one, we did most of the lower loop. That included quite a lot of the geysers including Old Faithful. We arrived at the park at 7:30am and after stopping and walking thru Fountain Paint pot, we arrived at Old Faithful around 9:00am. We were just in time for the eruption, which was scheduled for 9:10am (give or take 10 minutes). There is 2 rows of benches around the geyser and there were a lot of people but we did get a front seat. There was a lot of steam and then all of a sudden it started shooting the water, but with all the steam it was really hard to see. <a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-5tzBMu6E1xU/U8B43SVAirI/AAAAAAAACyU/FEd9ufyljbg/s1600-h/DSC008474.jpg"><img title="DSC00847" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC00847" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-Me7QwbhpX3w/U8B45RsLN-I/AAAAAAAACyc/G6s3ZiLMldY/DSC00847_thumb2.jpg?imgmax=800" width="346" height="264"></a> <a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-hMYb8ge8Yi0/U8B46_hyowI/AAAAAAAACyk/WevLlwoZ-Bs/s1600-h/DSC008725.jpg"><img title="DSC00872" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="DSC00872" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-TAW1aLJI3sc/U8B48ZcobMI/AAAAAAAACys/cpNx4VYcWi0/DSC00872_thumb3.jpg?imgmax=800" width="250" height="326"></a> </p> <p>Red Spouter is the newest geyser hole.
